Hilton San Francisco Union Square

I think this is the most I’ve ever paid for a hotel room – although thanks to the magic of loyalty programs, far from the most expensive room I’ve stayed in – yet over $200 a night only got me a king bedroom. So when offered the opportunity to upgrade using 3600 HHonors points a night to a `king bed tower room with city view’, I didn’t hesistate. Whilst this granted free wifi and a continental breakfast voucher for the Starbucks, it’d be worth the points just for the loftier vantage of the 39th floor:

Another unexpected perk of this property was the gym. If a hotel has one at all it often feels like an afterthought or the side-attraction to a swimming pool. Plus what you tend to find is cardio equipment, and I am no fan of running, especially if it doesn’t get you anywhere. So I’m pleased to report this one featured a proper lifting bench with rack, free weights, a Smith machine, and various isolation exercise stations alongside the obligatory array of treadmills and cross-trainers. At the time I visited, they were also trialing in-room fitness, in yoga or cardio flavours. Based on the booking pages these are no longer available, but hopefully the gym continues to impress!
